The Town of Pembroke is a small picturesque community located adjacent to Concord, the New Hampshire state capital, and bounded by three rivers, the Soucook, the Merrimack, and the Suncook. With a population of just under 7000, the town also encompasses the village of Suncook, the actual urban center of the area.
While a suburb of Concord, Pembroke maintains its own distinct identity and, within the town, diverse environments. Originally settled in the early 1700’s, the population grew during the Industrial Revolution with the establishment of a number of mills along the Suncook River toward the south. The early mill history of the town is reflected today in the many 19th and early 20th century buildings along the tree-lined streets in this, the Suncook section, where today a wide variety of businesses are housed.
The center and northern areas of Pembroke are noted for their sparsely settled development pattern. Large house lots and a rural wooded environment are characteristic of this area, and the Buck Street area is largely agricultural with several old farms still in operation. The Route 106 area is home to a manufacturing and service businesses.
Pembroke is also a highly desirable location because of easy access to all of New Hampshire and beyond. Route 3, which bisects the town, provides a direct route to Concord and Manchester, and Interstate 93 puts Boston just over an hour away. The Seacoast and the Lakes Region are within forty miles.
The town offers an excellent quality of life, with a small-town atmosphere yet with all the urban amenities that Concord offers close by. The school system offers two elementary and one upper-elementary school. The high school, Pembroke Academy, also serves the communities of Allenstown, Chichester, Deerfield, and Epsom.
