Laconia, New Hampshire
Laconia is the commercial and industrial hub of the Lakes Region. With an estimated 2005 population of just over 17,000, it is the largest population center in the region and the Seat of Belknap County.
Nicknamed the City On the Lakes, the city has nineteen miles of shoreline on four different lakes, including Lake Winnipesaukee, Lake Winnesquam, Opechee Lake, and Paugus Bay (part of Opechee Lake). Documents mentioning the name Laconia date from the 1600’s although the town, originally a part of Meredith and Gilford, was not incorporated as Laconia until 1855. Reincorporated as a city in 1893, Laconia includes the villages of Weirs Beach and Lakeport.
Laconia was one of the first towns to embrace the Industrial Revolution in America with the building of the Belknap Mill in 1823. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the mill was one of the first to convert from weaving to knitting (during the Civil War) and is the oldest unaltered brick textile mill in the United States. In addition to textiles, the city was once a center for the construction of railroad cars. Today, Laconia has a diverse mix of light manufacturing and high-tech industry as well as many professional and service businesses. Tourism, of course, is an important part of the economy as well.
The Laconia area offers an excellent quality of life. The public schools span kindergarten through high school as well as the Huot Technical Center for vocational education. Recreational opportunities abound with the city’s five public beaches and 150 acres of parks and recreation facilities. Shopping is diverse and plentiful, and the region’s major healthcare facility, Lakes Region General Hospital, is located in the city.
Many well-known New Hampshire attractions are nearby as well, including New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, Castle In the Clouds in Moultonborough, and the Meadowbrook Musical Arts Center in Gilford. Skiing is close by, and major metropolitan areas are within easy driving distance.
