The Meredith area is one of the most picturesque and consequently most desirable in all of New Hampshire. Situated on a protected bay in the northwest end of Lake Winnipesaukee, Meredith offers spectacular views of the lake and mountains.
Incorporated in 1768 and named after Sir William Meredith, an early vocal opponent of British taxation on the colonies, the town grew around small mills that utilized the available waterpower. By the late nineteenth century, the area became a resort, with visitors arriving from the south first by railroad and then by automobile. Meredith continues to be a four-season resort community today, attracting tourists as well as year-round residents who are attracted to the by quaint New England villages, beautiful mountain views, pristine lakes and ponds, and a host of attractions, exceptional shopping options, and many special events.
Part of Belknap Country, the year-round population of Meredith was just under 6500 as of 2004. Public education consists of one elementary school (PKR-4), one middle school (5-8), and Lakes Region High School. A community/technical college is located in Laconia, and Plymouth State University is nearby. Lakes Region General Hospital, a major health care facility, is right next door in Laconia.
Recreation options abound in the Meredith area, and shopping, such as Mills Falls Marketplace, is in town or close by. Manchester and the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport are easily accessible via Interstate 93.
