Nestled on a bay on the southeastern shore of Lake Winnipesaukee lies Wolfeboro, one the most picturesque towns in New Hampshire. Known as the “first summer resort in America” because of the estate colonial Governor John Wentworth built on the lake that now bears his name, the town has long been a four-season Mecca for tourists and for retirees from all over the country.
With a population of just under 6700, Wolfeboro retains its rural New Hampshire charm. Settled in 1768 and named for General James Wolfe, a hero of the French and Indian War, the town began as an agricultural community and then became a lumbering center. Wood and wood products drove the economy into the twentieth century, and today tourism is the primary industry.
The town provides an excellent quality of life. In addition to the New England small-town atmosphere, Wolfeboro offers an abundance of cultural resources. Of special note is the Great Waters Music Festival, which brings a variety of top-flight popular and concert music events to the area each summer. Also in town are two interesting museums, the Wright Museum, containing displays that interpret American life on the home front during the World War II years, and the New Hampshire Boat Museum, home to a large collection of vintage boats and boating memorabilia.
Wolfeboro is also home to Brewster Academy, once the public high school and now a well-known private prep school. Public education is provided through the Governor Wentworth Regional School District, which serves Wolfeboro and several surrounding towns. The town also boasts its own community hospital, certified as a critical care access facility and providing primary and secondary care for fourteen area communities.
Recreational opportunities are varied and available year-round. The summer months, of course, are filled with lakefront activities. In winter, residents and visitors alike enjoy over two hundred miles of snowmobile trails and more than thirty kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails. Major ski resorts are nearby, and the town has its own small ski area.
For scenic beauty and for traditional New England living, as a visitor or a resident, Wolfeboro is an ideal Lakes Region location.
