The Lakes Region of New Hampshire is the area where the meeting of lakes and mountains provides the backdrop for one of the most beautiful parts of the state. Located in the east-central section of the Granite State, the Lakes Region gets its name from the literally hundreds of lakes and ponds that dot the landscape.
The centerpiece of the Lakes Region is Lake Winnipesaukee, the sixth largest natural lake in the US, with 283 miles of shoreline and 275 habitable islands. The towns and villages surrounding the lake are picture-perfect New England: white church steeples appearing above the brilliant autumn foliage, sailboats on the water, and the majestic White Mountains rising in the distance.
Each town in the Lakes Region has its own unique character. Laconia is the commercial hub of the area. Located along the southwestern shore of the lake, Laconia is the region's largest city. Just to the north is Weirs Beach, a popular resort town with many family attractions.
Directly across the lake from Laconia is Wolfeboro, another major city and home to Brewster Academy, a nationally known co-educational boarding school with a focus on technology. To the east of Laconia, on the southern side of the lake, lies Gilford, home to Gunstock, a major ski area, and to the Meadowbrook Musical Arts Center, a large summer concert venue.
On the northern side of the lake are Center Harbor and Moultonborough, two quintessential New England villages. To the northwest is Meredith, which features the Marketplace and Inn at Mill Falls, as well as many museums, galleries, and specialty shops.
And while the Lakes Region offers a traditional small-town New Hampshire environment, major metropolitan areas are within easy driving distance, as are the White Mountain and Seacoast regions of the State.
