Bedford is one of the most desirable "executive living" locations in southern New Hampshire. Like most of the southern part of the state, the town's population has grown exponentially in the past 30 years, but because of careful planning and prudent zoning, much of the town has retained a traditional New England village atmosphere.
The town was originally called Narragansett Number Five when in 1730, the land was granted to soldiers who had fought the Narragansett Indians in Rhode Island. Since little development occurred in the succeeding twenty years, the area was re-granted in 1750 and named after the Duke of Bedford. It remained a farming area for many years and slowly evolved into primarily a bedroom community. A small number of working farms still exist in town, including a small cattle farm known around the world for its champion Belted Galloway bulls.
The number of well preserved historic buildings, predominantly in and around the center of town, adds to Bedford's charm. While some, like the original Town Hall, are still used for gatherings, others have been restored and put to new uses. Notable among these are the Bedford Village Inn, a four-star facility once the site of a working farm built in 1810, and the Wayfarer Inn, built around John Goffe's Mill, a grist mill established by Bedford's first town moderator in the 1750's. Another Bedford centerpiece is the beautiful Manchester Country Club, established in 1920.
And even though Bedford is largely a bedroom community, the town enjoys significant civic participation, especially relating to the school system. After many years of the town's sending high school students to school in Manchester, Bedford's new high school-middle school campus will open in September 2007. The town also supports a thriving farmer's market in the summer months. Recreational activities are many and varied as well, and the town is noted for the number of opportunities for young people to participate in organized team sports.
