Hooksett, New Hampshire

The Town of Hooksett is situated along the banks of the Merrimack River midway between Concord and Manchester. First known as Chester Woods and Rowe's Corner, this town was called Hooksett for nearly fifty years before being incorporated in 1822. The name may have come from a hook-shaped island in the Merrimack or from early fishermen, who called the area Hookline Falls. Rocky ledges flank the Merrimack River, and there were several cross-river ferries located here, as well as lumber mills and a brick-making establishment powered by the falls. In 1794, the Hooksett Canal was built and later became part of the transportation facilities of the Amoskeag Mills in Manchester.

In recent years, Hooksett has become a bustling industrial and retail center while still retaining its traditional New England charm and boasting many attractive residential areas. Among the fastest growing towns in the state, the town’s estimated 2004 population of just over 13,000 makes it the twentieth largest incorporated area in New Hampshire. Its centralized location and its proximity to Interstate 93 makes it a convenient suburb of both Manchester and Concord.

The Hooksett school district consists of one K-2, one 3-5, and on 5-8 school. High school students are educated in Manchester.

Robie’s Country Store, one of the most notable historic sites in the states, is located in Hooksett. Originally opened in the 1820’s, Robie’s was in continuous operation as a general store until 1997 and became a favorite photo-opportunity stop for Presidential candidates on the campaign trail during the NH Primary.  Today, it is an official project of Save America’s Treasures and is listed on both the New Hampshire and National Registers of Historic Places.
