Londonderry, New Hampshire

Londonderry is one of the most attractive communities in southern New Hampshire. A suburb of Manchester, the town’s location makes it convenient to Boston and the NH Seacoast and Lakes regions, all less than an hour away.

With an estimated 2005 population of almost 25,000, the town is one of the larger towns in the state.  But good planning and an aggressive posture toward conservation has allowed Londonderry to maintain much of its rural agricultural atmosphere.

In fact, commercial apple orchards contribute much to the town’s charm. Londonderry’s five orchards – Woodmont, Sunnycrest, Elwood, Moose Hill, and Merrill’s in North Londonderry – not only contribute to the local economy, but also provide valuable open spaces. Londonderry’s Apple Way, a designated New Hampshire Scenic and Cultural Byway, winds past orchards, old farmhouses and local landmarks, reminding residents and visitors alike of the area’s heritage.

The history of the town of Londonderry dates from 1718 when a group of Irish immigrants visited the area then called Nutfield and decided it would be a good site for a community. Four years later, in June 1722, the Nutfield area was incorporated as a township and renamed Londonderry after the city in Ireland from which most of the settlers had come.

Today, the town offers an excellent quality of life, with an excellent school system, many opportunities for recreation, and all the amenities of a metropolitan area nearby. Londonderry is also home to Tupelo Music Hall, one of the most interesting music venues in New England, presenting a wide range of performances by artists of international stature in an intimate setting.
